About Us

Greetings, Salutations, Hi There, Bonjour...!

You have stumbled, or more likely in your case, gracefully arrived at our home online. Thanks for stopping by!

We are the MacDonald/Gaudetts. A stereotypical Maritime family happy to call Nova Scotia, Canada home. *I deem us stereotypical due to the lobster fishing, the four wheelers and the Rapure Pie.

I am Allison, the voice behind the writing here on the site, and the glue that holds us all together!... well, at least I like to think so. Robert, my opposite sex common-law partner, would likely have a few things to say about that! And admittedly there would be some merit to it; he is the low key, mellow one that brings me back down to earth when I get worked up about something or everything and anything. *Remember I said SOME merit. Just some.

I'll give you a brief summary of life before we became us:

Robert was raised to be a mans man in a little fishing community outside of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He worked hard and played hard and always managed to make it home to spend Sunday morning sharing a breakfast 'scoff' with his parents, brother and any 'buddy' still hanging around.

I had no idea they still made men like him these days...

Now me. The only girl of four, raised in the back woods of South Western, Nova Scotia by a dedicated Mother after having lost my father to a tragic work accident at the age of one. Life was an uphill battle with never ending questions, evaded by constant change and a busy schedule. Learning was my distraction until I had the opportunity to start travelling and begin the journey to discover who I truly was and what it meant to love. Loving life, I learned, was the most important lesson of all.

Now I am sure you are dying to know how we opposites came to be us. Shall we?

In all honesty it is not a whimsical story of modern day romance, but I like to think it is still a lovely tale. I am a believer in being in the right place at the right time in the right state of mind with an awareness of  the effect life's experiences have played. Clear as mud?! Romantic, right? Not so much, I know. But, it is pertinent to our story.

I had just moved to the booming metropolis of Halifax and was crashing with my middle brother Joshua and his family while I figured out my next move in life. *No judgement please, I'm sure I am not the only one who went through a low point and had to mooch off an overly kind family member. So, on the mend from the pain of a/several failed relationships (which we can consider visiting said topic at a later date when you really want an earful), I was finally ready to be single. Enters irony. I am not a free spirit, go with the flow type of person. Big surprise eh?  But, this was my most recently deduced solution to the latter mentioned problems. Single I was and that was the way it was going to be for EVER.

But alas the newest release of Harry Potter came to theatres and off I scamper with Joshua, a group of his fanatical friends and a chattery mouth predicting with every intensity the glory that would be this movie! *I'm still pumped about it...too intense maybe?!  Enter Robert, a quiet shy guy with ZERO Harry Potter knowledge, tagging along to be introduced to a hot gal (that's me) who is spitting out gibberish about Hogwarts, Quidditch, and who knows what else. Assuming at this point that he was terrified and feeling cheated for being misled on the hotness factor is completely fair. *In my defence, I had no idea he was there to be charmed by me. Recall, single for life.

In spite of my crazy, he was charmed. Imagine! We met up a short time later celebrating my brothers birthday and Robert, though subtle, made his move. Which is actually laughable. And the rest is history. As modern knights do, he added me to Facebook after the party and requested my phone number so he could call and ask me properly for a date. I accepted, free meal in mind, but after a nice dinner and hours of walking hand in hand along the pier it was as if we were life long friends. I could be myself, no need to filter, and he came out of his shell. Even bold enough to admit that in my state of madness at Harry Potter I had blatantly mocked him...something to do with peanut butter m&m's. I plead the fifth. There ended my single life.

A few years later now, we have left the city behind and settled in a smaller town closer to Roberts family, his love for fishing and all things dirty and outdoors. We have built our first home and I am falling in love with it more and more after each tweak and project. Our family is growing as well, first with our runt golden lab Molasses who tagged along from our city adventures. *I'll let you mull over the ridiculousness that is his name. And since, the arrival of our beautiful son Finley Joshua. I am sure you will be hearing a lot more about these two guys along the way! We are truly blessed.

The adventures have only just begun however, and we would like to share the journey with you.

Robert has decided to change employments, doing as many do around here, and travel West for work. Two weeks on and two weeks off. While he is off and about Finn, Moe and I are home holding up the fort. Which leaves time for me to get into projects and mischief for Rob to come home and help me finish. Cleaning, decorating, organizing, reorganizing, projects and making things just-so is the name of the game. Interjected I am sure with rants, opinions, and silliness along the way. All likely done in the glamour of a frizzy ponytail, ankle bitter jogging pants and well worn slippers.

I hope you enjoy tagging along as we share the simple joys that help shape our lives.

  1. Allison,
It is so wonderful to read your story. I love the way you describe things. Funny how people who are connected through relations really don't know anything about one another, writing like this is a fun way to help people to get to know one another. I can relate to the smallest of comments like the secret card playing.

    1. Lorenda,

Thank you kindly for taking the time to leave a comment after reading up on our going-ons.
It is wonderful to receive feedback and know that someone out there is enjoying my quirky writing and projects.
I hope you will continue to stop by and catch up!
And it is so funny what people relate to sometimes. I actually wondered as I wrote about the taboo card playing if anyone else could relate!
      Take care.

  3. I am always pleased to see and hear when people from our hometown are successful in happiness! Which is, in my opinion, one of the most important ingredients in life!
Watching ones family grow is enriching in all aspect of sentiment. And it is clear, within your words, that with all that you accomplish aesthetically in your home you never forget to stop and enjoy that! That is what I enjoy most about your blog.
You have a wonderful family and home and I wish you all the best in your present and distant future!
    All of my Love,
    Raye-Anne Doucet-Levy

PS - Congratulations on your recent engagement. I hope that on your wedding day you are surrounded by all the people you love and love you. And when you walk down the isle towards your best friend and soon to be husband, you soak up every second of that feeling! From someone who knows...That as your walking towards him and your eyes lock. It takes your breath away and you begin to feel every heart beat! And you know that in that moment, it is only the beginning of your journey together as husband and wife.
